Charlene Griffiths

Hi, I’m Charlene

I have worked in the tertiary education sector for the last 20+ years, I'm experienced with the Visual Arts and a few little detours along the way. I have spent teaching English in Prague and six months in Penang. From National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) just across the road, I have now come to IH and I just love seeing talented students take off to the next level of their careers. I would say that my key business strengths include superior organisation and human resource management skills and proven project management experience. I am a natural networker and strategic thinker, focused on creative solutions and high-quality outcomes.

What do you think of IH?

There is absolutely no other residential experience quite like living in an IH. Built on an 80 year tradition that started in the States, we foster a community actually living out the principles of cross-cultural understanding in mutual  respect. The concept of strength through equity and diversity is in our DNA and fundamental to all that we do. If you believe that each individual can play a role in making the world a better place by embracing, respecting, and understanding our differences, and want to live in a supportive community of like-minded students, then IH is absolutely the right place for you.

How do you spend your free time?
I love to read, swim, and sleep.

What are your favourite spots on and off campus?
Maze Café and the Alumni Lawn- Maze coffee is great and the lawn is a nice green space to escape to. And my least favourite place, those blasted steps from middle to upper campus!!!

What is your favourite travel experience?
My standout travel experience is the one which led me to the campground in France where I met my now husband of 20 years. I was on a solo cycle and camping odyssey from the top of Holland (Groningen) to Switzerland (Zurich). It was an incredible journey through some stunning parts of Europe and a very special time in my life. Oh…and for the record, I absolutely love both my gorgeous girls equally.

What is your hidden talent?
Cake decorating….I make over ambitious birthday cakes, like the triple layer mad hatter cake with teapot on top…a bit naff I know, and they usually reduce me to tears at some point.

Advice to incoming IH residents?
We are in this together – I am so looking forward to meeting each of you and working together to uphold the IH tradition of forging lifelong friendships through our shared experiences of living under one roof.

Deputy Dean

The Deputy Dean is responsible for assisting the Dean of the College in the daily management of the college, as well as fulfilling the role of Resident Fellow in terms of providing academic and pastoral support to a group of students.

Resident Assistants

Resident Assistants (RAs) are assigned to each floor of International House. They’re volunteer senior student leaders whose role is to make sure each and every student has access to any support they may need. The RA team works closely with the Deputy Dean and Dean, ensuring the pastoral care of all residents is of the highest quality.
